Over the weekend we found ourselves with a few free hours before I had to leave for work, so we threw on our bathing suits, jumped on the subway, and rode to the last stop- Coney Island. The legendary Coney Island may not boast the fanciest beach (or the cleanest or the prettiest), but it does have a boardwalk & sand & little waves & the best hot dogs and funnel cake in town.
Biet loved loved loved all of the people and commotion. She rode on our shoulders and made friends with other beachgoers. She laughed and danced in our arms. She didn't even mind when a brief spell of summer showers passed through and rained on us (I personally adore rain showers at the beach- it somehow feels so special every time) But when it came time to dig her little feet in the sand, our daughter was not so thrilled. She didn't like the sand, didn't want to touch it or play with it or even eat it (which is sort of a baby's right of passage, isn't it?). The crazy shore winds freaked her out a bit too, so Gaby and I took turns carrying her most of the morning.
Hmmmm.. I guess you can take the girl out of the city...

When my oldest daughter was a baby, she had the same beach reaction {plus a very dramatic bout of crying when we tried to walk along the surf's edge}. Now she adores water-- be it pool, lake or ocean!

DeleteYou guys look so beautiful!
ReplyDeletep.s. Gus didn't fall in love with the ocean until his third visit. the first couple times involved tears. so. many. tears.
Oh no! I didn't think she was ready to dip her toes in this time. I'll let you know how it goes when we get to that big adventure..

ReplyDeleteShe's got some serious character! (especially for someone who can neither walk nor talk yet!)
DeleteYour hair is fabulous! And I have yet to take my daughter to the beach. I wonder if she'll like the sand or not? But, I digress, glad to know you had a fantastic weekend : )
